Title: Body of Water
Dimensions: 30.25" w x 29.75" h
Artist Statement: Ninety-five percent of San Francisco Bay's wetlands are now landfill or diked for salt ponds, leaving the ecosystem in a seriously unhealthy state. Every body of water lies in delicate balance with its inhabitants and humans have essentially inflicted disease on the largest body of water in the San Francisco Bay Area. The colors are a metaphor to draw parallels between the human body and a body of water: water ways are the colors of blood and land forms are the colors of healthy and diseased tissues.
Materials and Techniques: Silk crepe de chine hand painted using acid dyes and gutta-serti with some salt effects. Silk broadcloth backing and polyester batting; machine quilted with polyester and rayon embroidery thread.
