Title: Diversity Triptych
Dimensions: 52 x 56 inches
Artist Statement: This quilt is an observation of the diversity of the natural environment and an exploration of the changes that occur when humans modify it. The 18 woven squares are constructed with fabrics selected to interact with one another: transparent fabrics cross over patterned and color fabrics causing subtle changes; these small “aerial landscapes” are my observations. There are 6 color and fabric variations repeated 3 times and then set against 3 different color backgrounds. The contrast of the background, in the tradition of color studies, alters the appearance of the woven squares, representing the results of changing the environment. Thin meandering strips of fabric are stitched into the borders to connect the panels visually yet not physically.
Materials and Techniques: The square weavings are made from silk crepe de chine, jacquard, charmeuse, chiffon, metallic organza and Indian dupioni. The background fabric on the front and the back are silk Indian dupioni. The quilt batting is polyester and the machine stitching is done with polyester thread.
