Title: Glass Beach
Dimensions: 21 x 21 inches
Artist Statement: Water can take so many forms and this quilt is about the power and strength of water. There is a beach in northern California, near Fort Bragg, called "Glass Beach." It used to be a garbage dump and over time, the ocean has pulverized most of the garbage and what remains is a beach of rounded glass pebbles. Eventually each of these glass pebbles will become smaller and smaller until they return to being grains of sand. It's one of the ways in which nature is recycling our human trash.
Materials and Techniques: Metallic silk organza front with hand painted silk charmeuse waves, silk organza back, embedded glass pebbles, machine and hand stitched with rayon and metallic thread. I call this kind of quilt an "entrapment quilt" where objects are sewn in between two layers of transparent fabric.
