| Title: Forbidden Full Moon |

| Artist Statement: I created this piece after hearing the story of a friend who tried to organize a nighttime hike around the reservoir in Hetch Hetchy Valley in Yosemite National Park on the full moon. My friend was denied permission for his hike because the country was on a heightened terrorist alert and there were security concerns regarding the dam (the reservoir provides much of the water for the San Francisco Bay Area). Our national parks were created to preserve and provide access to the wilderness and I couldn't help but notice the irony of this situation. This quilt is about being forbidden from engaging in the natural wonders of our world - the beauty we are missing and the destructive effects this has on our collective psyche. |
| Materials and Techniques: Hand painted silk charmeuse fused to iridescent silk chiffon. Trapunto waves & clouds stuffed with polyester batting, machine quilted with rayon thread. Rhinestones hand stitched in place with metallic thread. Wavy cut panel edges left unfinished and frayed, hand stitched together with metallic thread. |
