Title: River Mend
Dimensions: 45 x 50 inches
Artist Statement: Rivers are the arteries of California, providing life blood for economic and natural life. However, our rivers have been damaged and fragmented by dams and diversions. There are approximately 1400 dams in California; only a handful of free flowing rivers and streams remain. Dams have played a major role in the decline and extinction of approximately 67% native fish species. Freely flowing rivers provide better water quality and they support more fish, wildlife and plant species. Rather than continuing to build more dams, we need to put effective water conservation policies in place to have a sustainable future. This quilt uses the metaphors of destruction (through cutting) and "mending" (through stitches) to convey the wish to restore some of these rivers to their free flowing and wild state.
Materials and Techniques: Hand painted silk charmeuse fused to iridescent silk chiffon. Trapunto waves stuffed with polyester batting, machine quilted with rayon thread. Multicolor rhinestones hand stitched in place with gold metallic thread. Wavy cut panel edges left unfinished and frayed, hand stitched together with gold metallic thread.
