Title: Wild River
Dimensions: 18 x 52 inches
Artist Statement: There are approximately 1400 dams in the state of California. Only a handful of free flowing rivers and streams remain – the rest are fragmented by dams. Dams have played a major role in the decline and extinction of native California fish species: approximately 67% are either extinct or in decline. Freely flowing rivers provide better water quality and their ecosystems are healthier; they support more fish, wildlife and plant species. This quilt is my portrayal of a portion of river in the process of being restored to its wild state
Materials and Techniques: Hand painted silk charmeuse fused to iridescent silk chiffon. Trapunto waves stuffed with polyester batting, machine quilted with rayon thread. Multicolor rhinestones hand stitched in place with copper metallic thread. Wavy cut panel edges left unfinished and frayed, hand stitched together with copper metallic thread.
