Title: Threading the Past
Dimensions: 29" w x 29" h
Artist Statement: This is a contemporary aerial view of the wetlands and salt ponds near Newark in the San Francisco Bay. The stitching lines that overlay the landscape are based on historic maps that show the former shorelines and wetlands channels of the bay, before much of the development was done. The stitching lines tell the story of where the wetlands in the bay have been filled and diked. They also tell a story of survival: if you look closely, you will see where some of the original water channels still persist today, despite being fragmented by dikes and highways.
Materials and Techniques: Silk crepe de chine hand painted using acid dyes and gutta-serti. Silk broadcloth backing and polyester batting; machine quilted with rayon embroidery thread.
