Title: Wild River
Dimensions: 18 x 52 inches
Artist Statement: We have acquired nearly all of the 194,000 miles of rivers, streams and creeks in California for human use. Only 1% of the 194,000 miles are permanently protected from dams, diversions, resources extraction and imprudent development. Efforts are underway to restore and protect more of California's rivers. This quilt is my portrayal of a portion of river in the process of being restored to its wild state.
Materials and Techniques: Silk charmeuse, hand painted with French acid dyes, fused to iridescent silk chiffon, stitched to a silk organza backing. The "waves" are stuffed with polyester batting, and then machine quilted with rayon thread to create a trapunto effect. Embedded rhinestones hand stitched in place with metallic thread. Panels hand stitched together with metallic thread.
